Chemistry Department is one of the nine departments in the Faculty of Education. The department offers undergraduate courses. It offers general chemistry courses in the first and second year to Bachelor of Science (Education) students in Faculty of Education and other undergraduate students studying science related programmes in Faculties of environmental sciences and health sciences. In third and fourth year the department offers specialized chemistry content courses such as: physical chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry and chemistry methodology courses to Bachelor of Science (Education) students only. Since chemistry courses offered primarily prepare students to teach in secondary teachers, the chemistry courses are designed in such a way that apart from chemistry, the students are allowed to take another teaching subject at level three and four.
Potential candidates who are interested to enroll in Chemistry courses need to have obtained a secondary school leaving certificate with at least credits passes in English language, Mathematics, Physical Science or Chemistry and Physics.
It is the vision of the Chemistry Department to prepare students for a diverse and changing world, and in the process contribute to a chemically literate society through teaching, research and service.
The Department strives to create a collaborative and supportive environment that enrich teaching and learning, develop and encourage professional service. The department endeavours to develop confident, well-prepared Chemistry teachers who will able to contribute to the country and the world community on issues relating to modern chemistry and chemical education. We are dedicated to rigorous standards for content knowledge, communication skills, research quality, and professional behavior. The department is committed to enhancing the public welfare and economic development of the country through participation and leadership in professional organizations, and development of strategic partnerships with other departments, academic institutions and chemical industry.
