To provide high quality education to history students studying to become teachers at secondary and tertiary institutions and mould patriotic citizens planning to work in the private and public sectors.
To promote awareness of the significance of history in the development of Social, Political and Economic needs of individuals and communities in Malawi through research and training
The department of History was officially established in 2007 having existed before as a section under the then department of Humanities for seven years since 2001. The first member of staff, Mr. N.T.H Mbowela was recruited in February 2000. Since then the departments staff membership has grown to 7 with 6 fully qualified members possessing Masters degrees and one staff associate. The list of academic members of staff with masters degrees include Mr. B.G. Nkhoma, Mr. H.C.C. Banda, Miss V.J. Mwandumba, Mr. Jamu Nyirenda and Mr. Nerva Dzikanyanga. Mr. M.R. Gundo is the member of staff on training. Areas of specialization by staff members include; Environmental History, Agrarian History, Political history (Democritisation and Pre-Colonial Kingdoms) and International Relations.
