Tourism is more than just travel—it’s about creating unforgettable experiences, shaping economies, and connecting cultures. At the Department of Tourism, we are committed to preparing the next generation of tourism leaders with the skills, knowledge, and vision to drive the industry forward.
Established in 2007, our department was created to bridge the critical skills gap in Malawi’s tourism and hospitality industry. A groundbreaking training needs assessment survey conducted by researchers from the University of Malawi and the Ministry of Tourism revealed that 97% of the workforce lacked formal training. This insight laid the foundation for a transformative academic programme designed to produce highly skilled professionals for the industry.
Originally launched as the Bachelor of Science (Tourism), our flagship degree has evolved into the Bachelor of Business (Tourism Management)—a programme that reflects the broad and dynamic nature of modern tourism education and aligns with global standards.
