Backgroung Information

Welcome to Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science, Technology and Innovation (FoSTI) at Mzuzu University. The Department was established in 2004 to provide high-quality academic experience, research and technological innovations in Chemistry for prospective chemists and other science related disciplines. Chemistry is a “central science” that provides linkages between physical sciences, life sciences and applied sciences. The Department aims at expanding on existing knowledge by creating new chemical knowledge required to create novel solutions to a wide range of local, regional and global societal challenges. The vision of the Chemistry Department is to prepare students for a diverse and changing world, and in the process contribute to a chemically literate and innovative society through teaching, research, technology, innovation and service. The Department strives to create a collaborative and supportive environment that enriches teaching and learning, research, innovation as well as develop and encourage professional service among its staff and students. The Department is committed to enhancing the public welfare and economic development of the country through participation and leadership in professional organizations, and development of strategic partnerships with other departments, academic institutions and chemical industry. Currently, the Department offers Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, and Master and Science and PhD in Applied Chemistry programmes. The Department endeavors to offer mainstream courses in general chemistry, organic and inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, physical chemistry and applied chemistry to students pursuing natural and applied science programs within FoSTI, as well as other science programs from faculties of Education, Health Sciences and Environmental Sciences.
